Iceland
Poppies (Papaver nudicaule)

My favorite variety of Iceland poppies are Champagne Bubbles. They will dazzle you with their immense flower size and unique luscious crepe paper blossoms in wondrous colours from creamy white to yellows, orange, apricot and red. They seem to be precariously balancing on their long, thin, fuzzy stems. They make gorgeous cut flowers. Sear stems after cutting for better vase life.

~ 2003 ~ Here's my take on the Oscars: First of all, I have to preface this with an acknowledgment that I live in LA and we are probably way more interested in Hollywood than a lot of you are but I want to defend the actors. Just because there are a few outspoken actors against the war, actors in general shouldn't be condemned anymore than we should condemn all country singers for the opinion expressed by one Dixie Chick. Speaking of which, my "Dixie Chick Award" for the most ill-timed antiwar speech goes to Documentary Film winner, Michael Moore. I'm sure you'll see this on the news but he was resoundly booed off the stage for expressing his unpopular views. That should be evidence enough that most of Hollywood are as supportive of our servicemen and women as any of us are. Host Steve Martin was enthusiastically cheered for his comment that "The teamsters are helping Michael Moore into the trunk of his car." Even Susan "what did Saddam do to us" Sarandon only dared to quickly flash the peace sign. When "upset of the night" best actor winner Adrian Brody (The Pianist) said he was "praying for a peaceful and swift resolution to the war and God bless our soldiers" he was given a standing ovation. So, what about those dresses? Well, due to the abbreviated red carpet walk, it was much harder to dish this year. For the most part, I thought everybody looked great. Stand-outs were Halle Berry, as usual, gorgeous in a gold, one strap sparkly gown that blended beautifully with her golden brown skin and Jennifer Garner (TV-Alias, Movie- Daredevil) who looked famously fit in a pale blue sparkly gown. Many chose black including Catherine Zeta-Jones looking fabulous 8 1/2 months pregnant and Julia Roberts in a halter number. Renee Zellweiger very boldly chose red and I have to applaud Kate Hudson, adorable and luminescent as always, who proudly refuses to get breast implants and still manages to look as sexy as any of them! I also have to applaud Salma Hayek for wearing that "unibrow" in her movie, Frida! She looked beautiful in black and white. I didn't see any real disasters in gowns but I'm sure that's because the real bad ones never made it on stage. The only one that did was the choreographer from Chicago who was dressed like an "old west dance hall girl." I didn't care for Julianne Moore's dress- it was pretty and she looked beautiful but it seemed like she needed a support bra. A little saggy. I also didn't like the way Mira Sorvino looked. I hardly even recognized her- think she's lost too much weight and her long, straight hair was unflattering to her face. I also didn't like Best Actress winner, Nicole Kidman's hair- too skinned back and there was something evil-looking going on with her eyebrows. As usual, not too much going on with the men. The one exception was Sean Connery who wore a ruffled shirt under his tux. Steve Martin remarked, "Most of the men are wearing Armani, Sean is wearing 'Red Lobster!'" I adore Sean Connery so I'll forgive him for that lapse and actually applaud him for taking a risk! What's he got to lose? As for best speech, I'll have to get back to you on that one. But I did think Steve Martin did a great job as host. Next to Billy Crystal, he is my favorite. Personally, I was thankful for the diversion of the Academy Awards after a very disturbing day in the news.
